Research projects

Three flagship survey projects are conducted by SSR—the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), and the Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS). All of these surveys are open to the public, providing valuable resources for research and teaching, and becoming the most widely used academic databases in Sociology that produce the largest number of publications. The new academic trend of openness and sharing has facilitated the cohesion of the academic community, improving the overall level of scientific study.

China General Social Survey(CGSS)

During 2003–2021, China General Social Survey conducted 14 waves with 159,326 persons responding to the national questionnaire, based on which 10,218 variables of social, economic, and political statuses were constructed. The survey provides valuable resources for research studies. By the end of 2021, 3,550 papers had been published in Chinese using this dataset, including 798 articles in English, among which 544 were published in SCI/SSC journals. This irreplaceable data resource has also been used for 1,193 master’s/doctoral theses in Chinese and 123 international doctoral dissertations, as well as 28 monographs.

◎ Research Innovation

In alignment with the nation’s needs and our academic strengths, we have created integrated hubs for research innovation. These research hubs transcend traditional departmental and disciplinary boundaries. All four planned hubs have been accredited as the university-level research bases and are supported by the “double first-class” special fund.
